It was a “full house” Tuesday evening at the Friendship Community Center, primarily due to our guest speaker Steve Pollick! Dave started the meeting at 6:30 with the pledge of Allegiance, followed by the minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report, by Denise. Bob Presented Howard Pinkley with the club’s perpetual President’s award for 2010, for being the founding father of the club. Steve Pollick was honored with the same perpetual President’s award for 2011, for the articles He wrote promoting canoeing and kayaking in Northwest Ohio. The club also gave Steve an “Honorary Life Time membership”. Winona sold raffle tickets for a chance to win a signed copy of Steve’s latest book “Best of the Outdoors Page: Celebrating 15 years of Nature in Northwest Ohio and Beyond“, which was won by Carol Ducey. Winona also was selling and taking orders for NWORR tee shirts that are dark blue with the club logo in white. A small logo on the front left, with a full size on the back, short sleeves are $12, while long sleeve is $15.
Then Steve gave a presentation of His 4 day canoe trip down the Maumee River last June with Matt Horvat. Steve talked about the wildlife they encountered and the lack of shore pollution on the 4 days, also the lack of water encountered downstream from Grand Rapids to Side Cut Park. The presentation kept everyone’s attention for the 45 minutes and even the 30 minutes of question afterwards were very interesting! If you didn’t win the book raffle, you had the opportunity to purchase a signed copy from Steve for $23 (tax included).
