This Saturday May 18th there are two dig events happening in North West Ohio:

Tri-Aventure in the Defiance area, where participants bike 35 miles, then get into their canoe/kayak at the Independence Dam and paddle 6 mile down the Maumee River then hike back 6 miles with 20% of your body weight in backpack! NWORR’s role is to assist the paddlers in and near the water along the 6 mile route. If interested in participating, give Dave a call to get more information- 419-726-9628.

TAKE ME BOATING TOLEDO – 10a.m.- 4p.m. at The Maritime Academy of Toledo. The Maritime Academy is proud to co-sponsor this event with the Western Lake Erie Safe Boating Council, City of Toledo, U.S.C.G., U.S.C.G. Auxiliary, ODNR – Div. of Watercraft Safety, Toledo Sail and Power Squadron, and The Josh Project, to kick-off the start of National Safe Boating Week 7 promote recreational boating activities in our area for everyone.

There will be an Open House at Maritime Academy & learn about kayaking & safe boating education. Watch the Toledo Fire Dept. Dive Team in action.

NWORR will have a booth there promoting kayaking and our group, stop on down, a kayak demo in the inside pool!

Rededication of landing

Howard Pinkley Landing re-dedication
There was a large turned out at last Saturday’s rededication of the Howard Pinkley Landing, by honoring Howard for making the landing a reality and his commitment to the area community. A honor guard unit from the US Coast Guard Bay View Station raised the American flag along with a “NorthWest Ohio River Runners” flag, then the Pledge allegiance was led by Clem Cybulski, after which the new sign honoring Howard was unveiled by His daughter Wendy Beallas, who then talked about her father’s love of the Point Place/Shoreland community. Howard had many visions, one being a canoe and kayak club that he started 4 years ago, known as NorthWest Ohio River Runners that use this landing every Tuesday evening at 6:30.

28th Annual Maumee Valley Tri-Adventure

Blue Week 2013 May 11th – 19th

The NWORR has teamed up with Oak Openings Region Green Ribbon Initiative “Blue Week” for our May 14th Tuesday Outing!

Whether you’re and experience kayaker or beginner, you’ll enjoy our slow paced paddle up the Ottawa River seeing the wildlife appear as we paddle away from civilization along the shoreline.

If you are planning on kayaking with us on May 14th, please register at nscaleloco@yahoo.com placing NWORR in the subject line, please include you name, email, phone number and number of kayakers, this will let us know how many to expect, to notify you if cancellation due to weather, also depending on water level, the launch site might be move at the last minute. So if we know you’re coming to paddle with us, we can keep you informed of any changes!

River Lures

In Grand Rapids (Ohio) there is “River Lures” who recently acquired a building (40′ x 100′)across the street from their original building. Chris Martin owner, can now display all his new and used/rental kayaks under one roof. He stores them vertically which there are about equal amount of sit on (left wall) and sit in (right wall) kayaks -over 40 and counting. Oh yes, if your an active nworr, Chris will give you a 10% discount!

WEAR YOU LIFE JACKETS/PDF’s

We wanted to remind everyone after what happened in Sandusky Ohio Sunday, April 7th, How important your life jackets or Personal Flotation Devices (PDF) really are! No matter how good of a swimmer you are, you can not be prepared for what can happen out on the unpredictable water, whether it be a small back yard pond or Lake Erie !

That is why from the very first NWORR outing, we insisted on anyone going out with us had to WEAR their PDF and it had to be secured (tied/zipped up), not sat on or laying in the cockpit thinking that it will be easy to grab it if something happens or if ODNR comes by for an inspection!

We have had a few people upset ( to say the least) and some do not go out with us, but most of them have “seen the light” and wear them diligently!

Sure the PDF’s are uncomfortable if you don’t buy the correct type for paddling and yes they are very warm in the summer’s sun, but know you’ll always return to shore for another enjoyable day of paddling!!

March 26th Meeting

Matt Markey gave a quick run down on his early years, which let us know that he is a “hands on” kinda guy! He is very much an outdoorsman!

He focused his talk about Asian Carp that threaten the Great Lakes aquatic life and it’s monetary impact as well! thank you Matt

For our March 26^th meeting, we will have The Blade’s Outdoor Editor Mat Markey

Matt will share with us his many fishing from canoe, hunting, and water experiences. He has hunted from California to Maryland, Fished Florida, Bahamas and Canada, is a state certified Master fishing instructor. Matt has been writing for over 30 years of which 20 are with The Blade and free lanced for various outdoor magazines. A native of Fostoria and a graduate of Bowling Green State University.

Since the February meeting was canceled due to bad weather, Dave will make and serve “His” famous chilli this month!

Larry Lindsay is rescheduled for the April 23rd meeting!

Just remember, May 7th, our first Tuesday evening outing, it will be here before your know it!
